Empathy for special children was launched in 2010 by a small group of like minded parents to combat the isolation of growing up with autism spectrum disorder or additional needs. The organisation remains parent run and lead.
Family Friendship Groups
Family friendship groups were our starting point and remain the core of what we do. The aim of the groups is to provide a forum in which families can meet in a safe, supported and friendly environment to socialise, enjoy some family time and to try something new.
We now run 2 groups on alternate Saturdays in Craven Arms and Oswestry. At either group you will find trained playleaders to support your family in their interactions, a timetable of regular activities and families much the same as yours. We hire out our buildings exclusively and the doors are locked throughout the session.

Empathy runs holiday activities one day a week during each school holiday. Again these are outings for the whole family, with playleaders attending to support. We try to maintain a ratio of 1 adult to 2 children as a minimum on all outings. Typical activities include
- Tickwood Farm
- Think Tank
- Dudley Zoo
- Mickey Millers Play Barn (exclusive use)
Our pilot project during the summer of 2013 for children 10 years and over was all about gaining independence and is the only activity we have run where children attend without parents.
The children attended 3 full days at Condover Hall where Hall staff were supported by our trained playleaders who are familiar faces to our children attending family friendship sessions.
We are seeking funding to run Unleashed again in 2014 and would welcome contact from interested sponsors.
